The Slave Calendar

When the colonialists arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652 and established their trading colonies, they did more than just displace the native Khoi and San people. In order to provide the labour power they needed to supply their ships; the Dutch started importing slaves from Europe. When they arrived at the Cape, their names were changed and they were given last names that matched the month of their ‘acquisition’. The Slave Calendar is an initiative by the Iziko Museums of South Africa that uses these portraits to tell the story of how the lives of former slaves and their descendants were affected.
